In late 1900, the Marquess of Tullibardine was in asked by Lord Kitchener, whom he had served under on the Omdurman Campaign, to raise a regiment of Scotsmen in South Africa, called The Scottish Horse. The regiment was raised quickly and soon saw active service in the Western Transvaal. A second regiment of Scottish Horse was raised from troops recruited by the 7th Duke of Atholl. Being a mixture of Scottish, South African, Australian and English mounted troopers they gained a very ferocious reputation and awarded one Victoria Cross.
It is though that many of these badges were made by hand by the farriers during the journey to South Africa and on arrival - hence the hand cut look!
It is 45mm tall x 40mm wide x 2mm thick and weighs 21 grams. It comes with attachment pin.
