helmet decal instructions

Instructions > Helmet Decal Application Instructions

Helmet Decal Application Instructions:

WWII British Helmet Decal NFS - Water Transfer using tracing paper - Instructions:
We only recommend using acrylic varnish, acrylic resins or acrylic adhesives on our decals. If you use solvent or petrolium based liquids there is a strong chance you will destroy the decal! For the 'tracing paper' method we strongly advise you use 'Humbrol Decalfix' on the shell before applying the decal.

Using tracing paper is a great way to ensure you place your decal exactly where you want it. Using it with Humbrol Decalfix means you do not have to rush the application and after application the decal is very secure.

We used a kids toy plastic helmet to demonstrate - this is probably the most difficult surface to apply a decal - the helmet is thin plastic and very flexible and the surface is covered in sand (like many British WW2 helmets). So if the decal will stick this surface it will stick to a smooth steel shell!

WWII German Luftschutz & Luftwaffe Eagles Decal application using tracing paper - Instructions:
We recommend this method for all large decals such as  Luftschutz and it may also be appropriate for Luftwaffe eagles.

How to 'wear down' your Museum quality decals.

If you want to know how to wear down your decal before applying it to the helmet, here is how. It is very easy to do! Notice we are saying 'wear' and not age, the two things are different and these instructions only show you how to wear down the decal not age it!

Wearing down your decal before applying it has two major advantages, the first being is that you will not damage any of the helmet paintwork by wearing it down on the shell. The second is that if you mess it up you just need to try again with a fresh decal. If the decal was on the helmet you would have to remove it or like they did in WW2 paste another decal over the top!

How to fix a genuine decal using a museum quality replica decal

Sometimes you will come across a decal that has been de-nazified or part of the decal has been damaged and removed. With WarHats decals you can fix these issues. Consider very carefully before you carry out a repair as you could end up devaluing the helmet!
