Excellent advice Warhats. Worked like a charm. I leveraged the wearing on head to dry to get it to shrink properly since this hat got a little bigger from use and me losing weight.

Just thought I'd let you know in case you want to share this advice more broadly.

[Advice from WarHats on washing Cap: Personally unless very dirty I would not wash them! But if you want to, then use lukewarm water and a mild wool soap or shampoo. Put the cap in and swish in suds gently. Rinse thoroughly in lukewarm water. Just rule out any wringing or twisting of the cap. Place on your head and allow to dry, this prevents shrinkage!]

If you were looking for an authentic WW1 cap, you have arrived at the one place able to supply it. When I would visit the annual military exposition or “Max Show” in Pittsburgh, PA there would be original caps and hats for sale by collectors. Often outrageously expensive, with included stains, repairs, and moth damage. These are the equal, minus the stains, etc.; travel back in time and by the unfortunate luck of the draw be standing at clothing stores. The sergeant in charge would hand you one of these on top of your uniform issue and perhaps wish you a bit of good luck. Absolutely perfect in every way.

Here is one of our customers taking the old Steyr 1888/90 rifle and the dog for a walk!

It bears a 13th LANDWEHR stamp on the buttplate and Carries an RZK (Remontni Zavod Kragujevac or Repair Arsenal Kragujevac) rebuild stamp on the buttstock. This meaning it was rebuilt in Serbia at some point.

To finish 'the look' he wears one of our Austrian Hungarian Alpine Mountain Troops Cap Pre-1907 into WWI.

This came a painted reproduction shell only. The shell looked a good shape, had some size stampings, is a decent weight and the where the rim is crimped over it is done neatly. The original owner had painted it the correct RAL colour for mid to late war so I left it as is. I purchased a suitable luftwaffe decal from WARHATS and applied that after aging it lightly first as demonstrated on Warhats website. I also purchased the steel version of the liner bolts from WARHATS and left these unpainted, just aged. The liner and straps are the cheap versions aged down and I re- painted the buckles and shortened the slider loops. I don't normally do reproductions shells but I do like this one, and it didn't cost an arm and a leg thanks to Warhats.

Originally a non decal m42 with about 20% exterior paint and somewhat less interior paint I've taken care to use as much original finish as possible. Liner is a 'scrubbed' German Norwegian liner. All parts except strap are original, I try to use original parts were possible.

M1915 Pickelhaube reproduction chinstrap

A recent purchase of mine was a 1915 pattern O/R’s Pickelhaube which had reputedly been with the same family since the end of WW1. Untouched for many years and looking somewhat neglected, it was missing both its cockaden and chinstrap. Other than that it was in very fine condition.

I had a spare set of cockaden, so all that was needed to finish the helmet off was the chinstrap. Now there are ‘reproductions’ and there are reproductions if you know what I mean, but if you intend to do a proper restoration you obviously want the best reproduction you can get. Over several years I have done many restorations, and I have often used parts supplied to me by Mike of WarHats.com based here in the UK.

I soon had the aged chinstrap – delivery is always extremely fast – and I started removing the rust from the buckles and anchor points to achieve the desired effect I was looking for. Right are a couple of photographs of the chinstrap as mounted on the helmet. It looks like it has always been there, and that is the effect you want. Worth every penny of the money spent.

I had one from Cyrus at Soldat.com in the States about 20 years ago, it was an Erel too, nicely aged, but the leatherwork was nowhere near the same standard as this, neither was the braid and bullionwork. The new brass sawfish on this one will soon tarnish and look the part. I’m not overly taken by the Eagle, I have to admit and may replace it? Got a bit of a ‘Lego’ look about it! But, still very happy overall and thanks for the awesome, fast and efficient service.

I highly recommend the WarHats helmet restoration service.

They did an immensely good job of refurbishing my extremely rare size 72 M40 Luftwaffe helmet. This involved removing the post-WW2 grass green colour paint, which revealed the original Luftwaffe decal and paint! I was very impressed with this shell stripping process as none of the Luftwaffe paint was damaged.

I also asked for the liner to be restored as it was dry, cracked, fragile and two of the 'fingers' were missing. This liner was restored to the highest standard as the pig skin was re-hydrated by conditioning it and the two missing 'fingers' were carefully sewed back on using top-quality reproduction parts.

I am exceedingly grateful for the brilliant restoration work that WarHats did on my helmet as it now looks stunning and impressive!

I just unboxed my kepi, and I can’t believe the work you did on it. I could not be more pleased. It appearance is totally authentic, in every regard.

The wear and tear of the peek, metal pieces, fabric interior and exterior makes the kepi appear as an original piece from over 150 years ago. The aging process is perfect from the bent chin strap buckle, to the sweat stains around the base of the cap.......just an amazing job throughout!

The instructions on your web site were very easy to follow - even for a novice like me. As a result, this morning I had an original Luftwaffe helmet badly vandalised in the past by having its eagle crudly scraped off damaging the paintwork underneath and making the whole thing an ugly undisplayable mess - now I have an original helmet, minimally, reversibly and authentically returned to its pre-vandalised state which can now be preserved and displayed in its proper original context.

The package arrived today. The box was a bit mangled somewhere in transit, but all of the contents are fine. The pins and the goggles are really nice.

As far as the cap goes, it looks even better than in the photos you sent. To be honest, a bit more aging might have been alright, but I did want it to look like it would in the 1940's and not an antique. The waffenfarbe is a good shade of green, better than what showed in the photos. If it were available, I would have liked the more light, yellow-green color, but that is just personal preference. The shade of green is good to go, as there seemed to be quite a bit of variation and cross-over between the Panzergrenadier and Gebirgsjäger colors.

Overall, I am very pleased with the cap and other items. They will make great additions to my collection and display (redoing much of it as of now).

The hat arrived this afternoon. I am impressed! The hat looks authentic and will be a valuable addition to my U453 collection.

This afternoon after unpacking the hat from the shipping box, I quickly assembled a small display of my Uboat items. Check out the photo I sent with this email. All the items in the photo are 100% authentic except the hat. The hat fits in seamlessly and perfectly in the display.

This weekend I'm going to set up my entire Uboat display including the hat. I have allot of great Uboat artifacts and only lacked a hat. Now I have a hat that would probably fool an expert.

The fitting of the helmetstraps on the swivel bales was even quicker than per your instructions: just use two adjustable pliers and forget about the vice!

The cap arrived a few moments ago. I needed that time to calm my excited heart before writing.

It is no less than stunning! Your people know their stuff. In my many years, I have collected, admired, then passed along quite a few original military artifacts. I have kept only a very few. I have an M43 feldmutze in original fitting with the late triangular Bevo insignia. I also have a kepi from the AH empire circa 1917. A few others...but the astonishing thing is they all fit my giant head.

Your beautiful cap is now my new favorite. I can get by with a WW1 in public...the WSS not so much, if you get my meaning. Strictly an around the house with that hat.

The hat fits me as if made to measure. Oh, wait. It was! Thanks very much for the fine work. If I can successfully keep the cost of this little beauty from my long suffering devoted wife, I may contract with you again. I always get her some pretty thing of commensurate value, so I expect to be in touch.
