WW2 M1938 Tank Helmets Refurbishment:
We acquired a few M1938 Tanker Helmets in poor condition. The shells were deformed, some of the leather was torn and deformed and very dry. It was clear that these helmets were worn and came from a source in Belgium who advised they were used in the Battle of the Bulge, but we will ignore this as they could have come from anywhere! They needed a good refurbishment!
The first stage was to repair the ripped and torn leather and to reinforce any weak leather areas. The second step was to condition all the leather and reshape the helmets. Please be aware we are carrying out 'honest' repairs, in other words they are there to stop the helmet deteriorating further and not blended into the original parts. Why I hear you ask, two reasons: to blend into leather is incredibly hard to do (some would say impossible) and may not strengthen the leather; and the second reason is that when the helmet is fully completed and ready for display you cannot see the repairs!
