WW1 German Model 1915 Pickelhaube Helmet - Refurbishment:
We bought this helmet at a bargain price, but it was in pretty bad condtion. We wanted to demonstrate how we can refurbish and conserve a 100+ year old helmet. Notice the word 'conserve' - we are not trying to 'restore' it back to its original form, we are trying to make it look great for display and stop its deterioration in a similar way that museums conserve and display items.
We have been pretty shocked by some of the pickelhaube restorations found on the net, mainly with the use of materials such as glassfibre, epoxy putty, nylon thread and superglues. We hope to be a bit more traditional and sympathetic with our restoration but where it makes sense, we will use modern materials.
