WarHats Review:
We jumped at the chance to own and sell this book. As far as we are aware no one has written a book on SS metal insignia till this one came along. In order to give a straightforward review we will break it down into the pros and cons.
Pros:
The book measures 25 cm x 17 cm and comes in hardback. It weighs under 360 grams, all this means it is easy to carry and take to military fairs. There is enough space to scribble notes on the pages as your knowledge grows. It covers most of the main eagles, skulls and cap buttons and some rarer ones. The pages on fakes is particularly good with extensive pictures. It makes you realise what a minefield it is to collect a genuine item, but does help the SS buyer!
Cons:
It does not cover all metal SS cap insignia, for example the first version skulls are not covered, nor are all versions of the second version skulls. Some of the printing is slightly offset - a very minor point and it is still perfectly readable. (This issue is now resolved)! The detail pictures could be larger in some cases.
In Summary:
This book is not for advanced collectors, but it is perfect for beginner and intermediary collectors as it does pick out details that you will not be aware of. The photographs could be larger, more detailed and more extensive, a good improvement for any second edition. This book will save you money by helping to identify fakes and selecting 'good' metal cap insignia. Also its a very interesting read - you will be saying 'Cupal, Tomback, Zinc and Aluminium' over and over in your head!
