The "Schiffchenform", (Oval boat shape), type overseas cap was originally developed by the DLV, (German Air Sports League), the civilian forerunner of the Luftwaffe, in 1933, and was adopted by the Luftwaffe shortly after its official establishment in 1935. The Luftwaffe Schiffchen is most commonly referred to as the M40 field cap, or side cap.
Make no mistake these are not the cheap reproduction caps from the far East sold on well known auction sites. These are hand made in Germany from Blue-Grey wool and lined with grey cotton cloth and machine stitched.
The inside front has a leather sweat protector and the piping is silver. The cockade and eagle insignia are hand made in Europe.
