The Austro-Hungarian Navy or Imperial and Royal War Navy (German: Kaiserliche und Königliche Kriegsmarine, in short k.u.k. Kriegsmarine, Hungarian: Császári és Királyi Haditengerészet) was the naval force of Austria-Hungary. Ships of the Austro-Hungarian Navy were designated SMS, for Seiner Majestät Schiff (His Majesty's Ship). The k.u.k. Kriegsmarine came into being after the formation of Austria-Hungary in 1867, and ceased to exist in 1918 at the end of World War I.

K. u. K. Kriegsmarine: Used as a generic tally to indicate belonging to the Navy department. Gold means served above deck (fighting roles) it was worn by many navy crews.
K. u. K. Unterseebootstation: Indicates that the crew belonged to a Underwater Station in other words Submarine base. One example being Pola-Brioni in Croatia.
S.M.S. Kaiser Franz Joseph I.: defended the Austro-Hungarian interests in China following the Boxer Rebellion and participated in shelling Franco-Montenegrin artillery batteries located on the slopes of Mount Lovćen in Montenegro.
K. u. K. Seeminenkommando. I.: See Mining Command based in Montenegro. Operated mine laying operations.
S.M.S. Erzherzog Franz Ferdinand: Participated in an international naval protest of the Balkan Wars in 1913. She was also one of the first ships to deploy seaplanes for military use, including mobilization to assist the escape of the German ships SMS Goeben and SMS Breslau and the bombardment of Ancona in 1915.
SMS Kaiserin Elisabeth: was a Kaiser Franz Joseph I-class protected cruiser of the Austro-Hungarian Navy. Named in honor of the Empress Elisabeth, consort of Emperor Franz Josef, the cruiser was designed for overseas service and in fact was stationed in China at the outbreak of World War I in 1914.
