This marking and other variations, were used on British Tommy helmets (and other civil helmets) by the Austin Motor Company in WW2.

These would have been worn by Wardens patrolling the factories to ensure 'all lights were out' and to help rescue personnel if the factory was bombed.
During the Second World War Austin built cars but also made trucks and aircraft, including the Lancaster bombers of the RAF (Royal Air Force), 617 squadron, better known as the Dambusters.
Suitable for hand or spray painting.
