U-505 used various conning tower emblems but the only one worn on the cap was the Axe and for its commander the Olympic rings. The axe was on the conning tower when he arrived and retained it after assuming command from Axel-Olaf Loewe but his symbol was a lion so there is mystery as to where the Axe came from. The boat went on to be commanded by Paul Meyer and Harald Lange. The boat is now in display in Chicago USA.
