This is a reproduction 3. Infanterie-Division and laterly 3.Panzergrenadier-Division cap badge, in new or aged condition. It is made to look hand made from brass just like the originals were made from Brass shell cases.
The 3. Infanterie-Division (motorised) was formed in October 1940 through the reorganization and redesignation of the 3. Infanterie-Division. It was destroyed at Stalingrad in January 1943. Survivors of the division formed the 3. Panzergrenadier-Division. It was sent to Italy in June 1943 and fought the Allies at Salerno, Cassino, Anzio and Rome before it was sent to France. It fought southeast of Paris before retreating to Saar. It was refitted in Germany in late 1944 before fighting in the Ardennes. The division was destroyed in the Ruhr pocket April 1945.
This mechanised infantry unit badge would have been worn on the left side of the cap and worn by all ranks up to the division commander. The nickname was "Kreuz mit 2 Balken" or Doppelkreuze (Cross with two beams), hence the badge!
It is approximately 25mm tall, 15mm wide and 1mm thick and is available in aged or new condition.
