U-505 used various conning tower emblems but the only one worn on the cap was the Axe and for its commander Peter Zschech the addition of the Olympic rings.
The axe was on the conning tower when he arrived and retained it after assuming command from Axel-Olaf Loewe. The axe was possibly the symbol for Captain Löwe's military graduating class just like the Olympic rings were the symbol for Zschech's graduating class. Göbler (author of the book 'Steel Boat Iron Hearts'), writes that the axe was also chosen because it is one of the most ancient weapons of war. On U-505's original lion conning tower symbol, the lion was holding an axe.
The boat went on to be commanded by Paul Meyer and Harald Lange. The boat is now in display in Chicago USA.
This reproduction cap badge is hand made as the original emblems were, they were not mass produced to factory specifications. It is made from brass and is new (unaged), condition. It can be attached to the cap by thread round the bottom of the handle and top of axe head base.
It is approximately 0.5mm thick, 27mm wide and 34mm tall. The last picture compares our new badge and our 'aged' version of this badge.
