U-boat U-505 used various conning tower emblems but the only one worn on the cap was the Axe and for its commander Peter Zschech the addition of the Olympic rings. The axe was on the conning tower when he arrived and retained it after assuming command from Axel-Olaf Loewe but his symbol was a lion so there is mystery as to where the Axe came from. The boat went on to be commanded by Paul Meyer and Harald Lange. The boat is now in display in Chicago USA.
This reproduction cap badge is hand made as the original emblems were, they were not mass produced to factory specifications. It is made from brass and is aged, condition.
It can be attached to the cap by thread round the bottom of the handle and top of axe head base.
It is approximately 0.5mm thick, 27mm wide and 34mm tall. The last picture compares our new badge and our 'aged' version of this badge.
