WW2 German Kreigsmarine U-Boat Captains Cap U-172. Sold
This cap would have been worn by u-boat U-172 captained by Kptlt. Carl Emmermann, Knights Cross with Oak Leaves, winner. Made famous by sinking 26 ships.
She was Sunk on 13 December, 1943 in the mid-Atlantic after a 27 hour fight west of the Canary Islands, by depth charges and Fido homing torpedoes from Avenger and Wildcat aircraft (VC-19) of the American escort carrier USS Bogue and by some 200 depth charges from the US destroyers USS George E. Badger, USS Clemson, USS Osmond Ingram and USS Du Pont. 46 survived and 13 seamen were killed.
This is a first class reproduction of a Kriegsmarine U-Boat Commanders Peaked cap showing ageing, patina markings, discoloration and wear.
The leather chinstrap, hat band, wreath etc. all show good wear and the 'merman' - the emblem of U-172 is heavily rusted.
