The regiment was formed in the first days of November 1914 and had to pass its baptism of fire on the western front on December 4, 1914. The regiment fought continuously until the armistice on the Flemish front. It had experienced no brilliant victories in open battles or defensive battles, but years of difficult positional fighting on Flanders' flooded soil and in the sand dunes of the North Sea, arduous position building, enduring the strongest artillery fire and countless successful patrol operations. Over 2000 members of the regiment drenched the Flemish countryside with their blood; Approximately 700 crosses in Belgium's honorary cemeteries bear the name of the regiment and provide lasting testimony to its deeds.
