Karl-Friedrich Merten (15 August 1905 – 2 May 1993) commanded the U-boat U-68 in Germany's Kriegsmarine during World War II. He received the Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross with Oak Leaves. Merten was credited with sinking 27 ships of the 33 sunk by U-Boat U-68. This reproduction cap is one which would have been worn from the early days of U-68 and prior to him being promoted to Korvettenkapitän in April 1941.
