WW2 German Cavalry Officers Peaked Cap EREL - Refurbishment:
This cap was purchased by us on a online auction. We intend to refurbish it and we may sell it on, so please email us if interested.
This cap was in a pretty sorry condition. It had obviously been compressed badly by a heavy object. The cap was pretty much flat, the visor was flat and cracked on one of the edges. The reed band had come away from the stitching and the leather liner was detached from the peak. There were two visible rust stains on the outside and the eagle had been removed - possibly after the war!
Now interestingly the cap is made of fine doeskin, which usually indicates an officers purchase, but this cap came with black NCO/Enlisted chinstrap buttons but with an officers chinstrap. So we can assume that this cap most likely belonged to a NCO who was promoted. Both the chinstrap and buttons are original.
Now the good points. The wreath is period attached and the silvered cockade is of the rare EREL ventilation type. Notice the fine wire mesh at the front of the cockade. There is a hole completely through the cap and terminates on the inside with a round washer, so in theory giving the wearer some ventilation. The leather is EREL embossed as is the sweat protector. The cap overall is not ripped, does not have any significant moth holes and is pretty clean.
This cap is well worn on the inside - so it has not been sitting around in someone's barracks or home, it has been used in the field, just the way we like them. You can see the holes where the eagle and traditions badges were attached.
We have secured a genuine eagle which will match the early war wreath and a couple of genuine officers chinstrap buttons - this cap deserves a proper promotion!
See the pictures for the finished result - they speak for themselves.
