M1 M2 & M1C Helmet WW2 Chinstraps a brief Summary of Colour:
There is a lot of misinformation surrounding the M1, M2 and M1C
chinstraps and their size, material, shape, fittings and colour. So with regards to the colour here is our researched information: The first chinstraps were all Olive Drab 3 (OD#3), with several variations of shades of OD#3. Now bear in mind there were two shell manufacturers - McCord and Schlueter who both used different chinstraps, this means there was not really a standard OD#3 colour. In 1943 the US Army introduced Olive Drab 7 (OD#7), across all their web equipment, the same was the case with the chinstraps, which also used a different colouring method to attempt to stop them fading like the OD#3 straps. However the Schlueter OD#7 was lighter than the McCord OD#7. |
The M2 helmets all had OD#3 chinstraps and had nickel DOT fasteners. The M1C mainly had OD#7 chinstraps with black brass DOT fasteners but of course OD#3 chinstraps with black brass DOT fasteners still existed so these were also used on the M1C Airborne Helmet.
Given that both OD3 and OD7 chinstraps faded with use means that in summary you will find many different variations of shade with US Army WW2 M1, M2 and M1C Helmet chin straps.
